Upgrading to the Next Generation: G-Series GT Becomes G-Series V GT5
The enhanced G-Series V GT5 combines proven performance with advanced sensor technology and full backward compatibility
Temposonics is expanding its G-Series V product portfolio with the new magnetostrictive GT5 sensor models. As the successor to the GT2/GT3, the redundant GT5 position sensors combine the familiar housing design of the predecessor series with the advanced electronics platform of the fifth generation, making them the ideal solution for operators looking to upgrade existing machines to the latest technology without any modifications. The GT5 continues to offer dual or triple redundancy: two or three independent measurement systems ensure maximum availability. This is a crucial advantage for applications where downtime is not an option.
Anyone currently using a G-Series GT sensor knows its strengths: precise position measurement, robust construction, and field-proven reliability even under demanding conditions. The hydraulic steelwork sector is a prime example, where locks, weirs, and lift bridges depend on accurate sensing. With the GT5, Temposonics advances this product line and brings it fully up to G-Series V standards.
The GT5's housing remains unchanged, allowing installation into existing applications and systems without any structural modifications. What has changed is on the inside: the electronics are fully aligned with the G-Series V platform. Since the GT5 is backward-compatible with the GT2/GT3 not only mechanically but also electrically, no adjustments to the controller or wiring are required. A direct swap is possible with no retrofit work involved, even without touching the hydraulic installation. The sensor is available with stroke lengths up to 3,500 mm. For longer strokes, the H3 sensor rod with two or three R-Series V RF5 sensors is recommended to ensure dual or triple redundancy.
GT5 configuration is handled through the TempoLink® smart assistant. The tool is already familiar from the G-Series V — the GH5 and GP5 are set up using the same workflow, and the GT5 is no different. With the TempoLink® smart assistant, setpoints can be adjusted on-site and current sensor status values can be read out directly. This saves time during commissioning and simplifies diagnostics in the field. For teams already working with the G-Series V, it is a familiar and proven process.
At the heart of every Temposonics sensor is the company's proprietary magnetostrictive technology. The core component — a magnetostrictive waveguide developed and manufactured in-house — enables non-contact measurement with no mechanical wear. This ensures a long sensor service life, high reliability, and maintenance-free operation. Because the sensors output absolute position values, no recalibration is required after a power outage or system restart.
