Reliable in-cylinder sensing for fluid power applications

In-cylinder position sensing is essential for the performance, safety, and efficiency of modern fluid power systems. Whether controlling heavy-duty hydraulic presses, hydraulic pitch cylinders, or industrial automation cylinders, precise linear position feedback enables smooth motion control.

Temposonics® magnetostrictive position sensors are the trusted standard across fluid power applications - renowned for their exceptional accuracy, long-term durability, and cost-effective operation. Thanks to their non-contact measurement principle and robust mechanical design, our sensors deliver high linearity, excellent repeatability, and stable performance - even under extreme conditions such as:

  • Severe shock and vibration
  • High-pressure environments
  • Exposure to hydraulic fluids and contaminants
  • Electromagnetic interference (EMI)

In-cylinder sensor solutions

Our rod-style sensors are engineered for direct stroke measurement inside hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders. Temposonics offers a broad range of options in terms of:

  • Sensor stroke lengths
  • Mechanical designs (standard or embedded mounting, rigid or flexible rod)
  • Electrical interfaces

Standard mounting involves a threaded flange and O-ring, which allow the sensor to be securely sealed into a port opening at the cylinder end cap. For a more compact and protected installation, our embedded sensor variants integrate entirely within the cylinder. Here, a pressure-resistant sensor rod is housed in a bore drilled through the piston rod assembly, with the position magnet installed on or within the piston head for precise and maintenance-free position tracking.

Modular design for minimal downtime

The R-Series V, G-Series V, and GB-Series rod sensors feature a modular architecture that allows independent replacement of sensing elements and electronics - without disturbing the hydraulic seal. This eliminates the need to break the pressure boundary during maintenance, drastically reducing:

  • Downtime during service
  • Potential fluid leakage
  • Total maintenance cost

This design not only improves machine availability but also aligns with sustainability goals, as it extends product lifespan and reduces material waste.
